Smart Board

Technology Reflection Assignment

Description/Experience
In last seminar we were taught about how the use of smart boards can enhance the classroom. I found that smart boards can be used for more than a simple projection screen or white board. The instructor showed us all of the different ways a smart board could be utilized. I found that the games would be a good way for the students to be able to learn and have fun at the same time.

Application
The age group I would be teaching in a middle school basic physics class. The students will be between the ages of ten and thirteen.
The students will have been taught about momentum and levers the in the class prior to doing this activity. In this activity the students will be using the smart boards in order to play a game that forces them to use the ideas of momentum and levers to hit the star.
I would be able to tell if the students understood the process by if they were able to complete the levels in the game. They game would be assessing the students for me all I would have to do would be watch the students perform.
The day before the students would be learning in lecture form about momentum and levers. I would make sure that each student had a grasp on the material before ever introducing this activity.
The next important step would be making sure the students were comfortable with using the smart board. I would have to introduce the technology to them and show them the basic steps. It will be important for me to monitor while they are using to make sure they are not struggling to use the technology.
Finally the students would get to play the game. I would watch as they played and see how the students are doing. If a student cannot move past a level I would step in to try and help them understand what they are doing wrong and how to use physics to succeed.
Reflection
The use of this techonolgy allows for me as the teacher to gauge how well the students are performing while using the technology. It also is important that I will receiving formative evaluation as I watch the students perform.
The use of the smart board technology allows for the students to have fun while learning physics. In this age group or truly any age group physics can be dull and boring, by using this fun game it allows for the students to have fun while learning.
--Pedagogical-Content:
I would introduce the material to the students in a traditional classroom setting. I would lecture on the material and make sure that the students had a full understanding of the material. I think that the students and most students respond to lecture and being taught the material. I would have a power point slide that laid out the important parts of the lesson.
The idea of momentum and levers is a pretty basic one in physics. I would not need for the teachers to not know much about momentum and levers, but I need them to be excited to learn about the topic and I feel that they will be excited. It is my job to make the topic look appealing.

--Technological-Pedagogical:
The technology would not be teaching the students, it would be assessing them. I would use the technology as a basis to see how the students have picked up the topic and what I need to cover again. The technology would make it easier for me as the teacher to assess how well the students have understood the topic. The technology will give me direct and fast feedback.
I would need to use classroom strategies to make sure my students stay on task. I would need to make sure they realize although this is a game and it is fun they still need to be thinking in an educational way. Continuously questioning why it is working or why it is not working.

--Technological Pedagogical Content:
The technology will back up what I have taught to the students. It is in place to act as an aid in assessing the student’s performance. The game will give feedback to what the students have learned, as well as what they have struggled with. Once I know this information I will be able to go back and re-teach the materials that students have struggled with.
I would not be able to give the students the game to play without the technology. The technology allows for my students to have a fun way to practice the material. The students can use this technology to know personally what they have learned and what they are going to need to work on for the actual assessment.

Technology Reflection: Instructional use of IPAD

Description/Experience
In the last seminar we attended we were taught about how IPAD’s can help students. I learned that IPAD’s are great tools to use for practice. They have many apps that you can use to reinforce what you have taught them. For instances if your teaching a spelling lesson you can first go over the words with the class. Instead of practicing these words in a boring way such as writing them five times each, the students can get on a spelling app and work with it to help them better learn the words.

Application
The learners for this exercise would be would be students in the 5th grade. I want for them to learn where each state is located as well as how to spell each state properly. At the end of the activity I will be giving the students a blank map and I will want them to be able to spell and place each state in the correct spot.

The students were familiarized with the IPAD’s in a seminar the school held at the beginning of the year. Our lesson would begin with the students joining me at the front of the room with near the map. I would read off each state while pointing to it to show them where it was and how you pronounce it. I would then partner the students and have them share an IPAD. Once they were settled and opened the state’s app I would have them work through the app together. This would have to be a multiple day project because the students would not be able to learn all 50 states in just 1 day of working. Once I felt comfortable that the students knew the states and that they were going to be able to perform, I would give them a blank map for them to fill out.

Reflection
The use of the IPAD will make it fun for the students to learn and memorize the placement and spelling of the states. I feel it is important for students to know where each state was, but I know that it is a hard topic and it needs to be as fun as I as a teacher can make it.

I believe that this technology for this project will be extremely effective. Students do not want to be bored with paper and pencils. In practicing with the IPAD they can just drag the states into the map. The IPAD also allows for the students to get direct feedback. It is important to see direct feedback because it will allow for them to see what they know and what they need to work on.
--Pedagogy-Content:
I would start by giving the students an instruction with the map in the front of the classroom. I will show them where each state should be located as well as how you spell it. Once I feel as the teacher I have taught the students and they understand I will let them loose on the IPAD’s to practice.
I would be concerned that the students in my fifth grade class would have not been taught about a map before. If this was the case I would have to take more time in order to instruct the students on the basics of a map. I would not have a concern about the children’s ability to use the technology. As I stated early the students attended a seminar on IPAD’s at the beginning of the school year and are comfortable using the technology.

--Technology-Pedagogy:

The IPAD would be used specifically for the use of practice. I would have already taught the students about the placement of the states and the spelling of the states. Once I did that the students would use the apps to practice spelling and placing the states.
The technology would be a back up to assist me in teaching the students. I would take the time to teach them about the topic. The technology would then back me up and allow for the students to practice and receive feedback on their progress.
In using the IPAD I have to pair the students together because we do not have enough for each student to use. I need to make sure that each student is receiving equal time with the technology. If one student gets more time they will have a clear advantage on the quiz and that would not be fair to the other student.

--Technology-Content:

In teaching this topic with the technology it allows for two things. The students will be able to have fun and use the technology for fast feedback. The other alternative would be using a paper map and a pencil. This way of working on this project would be extremely boring. The teacher would also have to go through each individual student’s paper and grade them. This would get rid of instant feedback.
This activity would allow for the students to practice in a fun way as well as giving the students instant feedback. It allows for the students to not have to use a paper and pencil. Also it allows for the teacher to not have to grade each individual’s paper therefore allowing the teacher to spend more of their time helping the students then grading them.
--Technology-Pedagogy-Content:
I feel that the teaching of a map has to be visual. The first thing I will do in teaching the students is show them the map and allow them to analyze it. They will then visually use the IPAD to place each state in the proper spot.
The use of the IPAD will allow for the students to get instant feedback and work quickly and efficiently on the task at hand.
I would teach the students in a big group and then break them into partners. While they are working with the apps I would walk around and make sure they were not having any trouble.

Technology Reflection

Technology Reflection Assignment

Description/Experience

In the last class we had we went over two main programs that can be used in the classroom. The first one we went over was Edmodo which was introduced to use by a guest speaker from Clay Betel High School. I felt that Edmodo would be a great way of reaching students. It is very comparable to our ecampus.  The second program we went over was called Prezi. This program is similar to power point but is a little bit more high tech. I think with a little practice it will allow for me to master the program, as well I feel it makes for a cleaner presentation.

Application

In the two programs that I previously discussed I decided to pick Edmodo to use. I would first want the students to be able to use the technology and be comfortable with the webpage. I then would want for the students to be able to work on their own in responding to a question, and then being able to comment on other students in the classrooms responses. This activity would be meant for older grades probably 8th-12th. I would be able to read their responses to the questions that were originally posted and know if the students are grasping the concepts or not.
In class I would take the students to the computer lab and introduce the students to the website and get them set up and ready to use it. Then they would have that evening to log on to the web page and answer the question. The next day we would talk about the question and see what the students had to say. Lastly I would have the students comment on another classmate’s response.

Reflection

Pedagogy-Content:
I would represent the content to the students by demonstrating what they were to do. I would have them all get onto the computers and show them what the website was and how they were to use the website.
The preconceptions I would feel would be excitement. The fact that the site is similar to facebook would most likely make the students look forward to using it. I feel that the only problem that could arise is if you had students that did not have access to the internet at home.
Technology:
The major function of this technology is to use it for social networking. It allows for the students to log into their class and work with their fellow classmates via a web based chalk board.

It is an easy site to use and find. It could cause trouble if you had students in the classroom that were unable to have access to internet at home. But I feel that the percentage of students without internet would be low and you could find a way to work around this.
Technology-Pedagogy

The use of technology would be the students getting onto the internet, as well as getting onto the Edmodo site.

It would not necessarily change the way I teach it would change the way we follow up and review. I would still teach the students the lesson in a traditional way but they would be asked to answer questions of the lesson on the site later that night. This would allow for me to see which students were grasping the concepts.

This way of assigning work would allow for me the teacher and for the students to stay organized. The web page would have a calendar to allow them to look and see when each entry and response would be due. This would help the students to stay focused and keep up.
Technology-Content:
It would allow for the students to give me examples and explanations and deeper explain their knowledge for the subject after being taught the subject.

Instead of the students doing boring worksheets, they would be able to get onto the site and answer specific questions involving what they had learned that day. I feel it would also allow for them to get great review of the topics at the end of a day and help in retention of  the material.
Technology-Pedagogy-Content:

This technology would just be an assistant it would not be doing my job for me. It would allow for me to ask the students specific questions at the end of the day and give me instant feedback on what the students were able to retain from the day as well as what I needed to talk about more the next day.

It would just allow for me to give the students a new and fun way of practicing learning the material. It would be a great help in getting the students interested in their own learning.

I would teach in lecture style probably using a power point or Prezi program to give the students visual stimulation. I would also after each lesson show them what the questions would be for that night and ask the students if they had any questions.
